Gary Vaynerchuk, True hero of our time

Today I was present at the Emerce eday; the 'promise' of this day was to have an insight of the future of online marketing & technology :-) Fortunatly I have been long enough around....... ; over the day, the speakers were from 'nice' down to 'no-brainer'; but at the end of the day one person made my day:

Gary Vaynerchuk, who gained fame as the host of Wine Library TV, a daily internet webcast on the subject of wine.

His presentation was very motivating; below you find an old one:

Small change that made me smile

I needed a logo for one of my new projects. So yesterday I went to logotournament.com & submitted a contest for my logo. At logotournament.com a lot of designers from all over the world are gathered to design your logo. Starting rate to submit a contest is $250 and the higher, the more designers you will attract. So imagine, going to a design-studio and say after your briefing is done: my budget is 200 euro; this 200 euro was spent already during the intake, after they stopped laughing ofcourse :-)

I didn’t want to sit at the very bottom, so I submitted $350 for the winning logo & made my briefing. After 2 hours the first entry was there! And now 24 hours later 43 entries arrived. Ok, some are 1-size fits all, some are adjustments and ‘diap’ duplicates. But imagine, within 24 hours a normal design studio would have given you either the de-brief or the planning & in best case both. But in no-way they would have given you a first impression of a logo.

We all can debate if the logos are the best or not. Time & success will tell. For sure this is another small change in the industry & I smiled every time when I refreshed my page and discovered a new entry.

An introduction to VRM

For one of my new initiatives I did a lot of research over the last months, talked with even more people & always when I referred to VRM (Vendor Relationship Management) I lost them. From the moment I joined ProjectVRM of Doc Searls at the Harvard’s Berkman Center, I became an ambassador of this new approach (or let say: revival of the old marketplace principle) . The reciprocal of CRM.

For people who are not too much familiar with this, VRM provides customers with tools for engaging with vendors in ways that work for both parties. Here a presentation that explains the still abstract concept.

Time to sponsor sXephil??

Im checking youtube.com ratings once in a while, just to catch up with the trends there. Music is always very on top, but yesterday the Nr 2 video worldwide was from "sxephil", Philip DeFranco.

Philip, voted the Sexiest Geek of 2008 by Wired, runs a youtube channel with one of the most subscribers (608208). He will do so till November 4th 2009. DeFranco is a strong activist of the charities for PKD due to his grandfather, his father and later himself being diagnosed with it.

sXephil's most viewed movie: about 5 million times

For advertisers maybe a nice opportunity to combine online with mass & charity for a great cause. ok, ok, they wont run the whole communication yard yet by only sponsoring, but I am sure with Philip we can invent new ways of dialogue with his audience to embed the sponsor & raise money for PKDCure.org at the same time!

Augmented ID for VRM & Tom Cruise?

Remember that in Minority Report Tom Cruise walked through a shopping mall and advertisements jump out at him from each store? It was Steven Spielberg’s vision of augmented reality in 2054. Spielberg’s future of advertising probably isn’t that far off the mark.
Obviously Tom Cruise didn’t have an Augmented ID yet. In the movie all ad’s where screaming for his attention, but he was really busy with other things.

When initiatives like Layar & Sekai Camera, Augmented Reality Browsers which do make things relevant, personal & in time, are made in reverse? So that information comes to the consumer instead of just another smart way of search?

In this augmented ID example movie the emphasis is on social networking / personal information, but imagine how happy we both consumer & company will be if we add vendor related requests. (Of course according to guidelines identity2.0.) Yes, then we will have an extra Then Tom Cruise doesn’t have to crawl through all irrelevant virtual ads; he would have received support by vendors, like we all need: in time, personal & relevant.

The consumer break-up

This one goes without saying :-)

Have a great day!
(btw I have changed the video at the right as well; its a funny one when you are not working at a big ad firm)

Role of internet & broadcasters

Working with internet people is great; working on cool new initiatives online is very nice as well; and sometimes reality gets you: not everything is about to be online, not everything is about the social media, data is not the ‘new gold’, online ‘men next door’ social networks are not the holy grail;

Working with people in broadcasting is great as well; thinking about how to capture a bigger audience than expected has his charm; and sometimes reality hits you. Not everything is managed around TV-slots. Not everything is about reach, not everything is about the celebrities, and our live doesn’t need always a make-up artist nor a composed music underneath.

And then Danyl Johnson was there; a 27 year old singer doing his 1st audition for Britain's Got Talent 2009. Blowing the audience and jury away & more important: it gave me an emotion which I didn’t feel in a long time. Goosebumps, shivers, a great positive feeling and the urge to tell the world!

unfortunatly I couldnt insert this videoclip, as the insertmodule is disabled of all Xfactor videos :-/
but here a link to THE MUST SEE VIDEO:

We all agree that there will stay a role for both industries, but currently they are trying to do the same thing. Internet has to avoid trying to replace television with online-television etc; it has to optimize facilitating dialogue, interaction, providing the human touch. And broadcasters shouldn’t try copy their business-model of television online (with ad’s before a stream on destinationsites 'broadcaster.com' );
It has to be where the people are, where all niches will make the mass for them, provide them reach. It has make sure we will all see the Danyl Johnson’s of this world; all over the net as well.
